Energy Hardship Funds: How to Access Charity Grants for Utility Debt

What are Energy Hardship Funds?

If you have built up a massive debt on your utility accounts that you cannot afford to clear through a standard repayment plan, you may be able to get a non-repayable grant from an **energy hardship fund**.

Most major UK utility firms set aside dedicated charitable funds each year to help vulnerable customers clear severe arrears. Crucially, these are grants—not loans. If your application is successful, the money is paid directly to your utility account to wipe out or heavily reduce your balance.

The British Gas Energy Trust (Open to All)

The most significant fund in the UK is the **British Gas Energy Trust**. Despite the name, you **do not need to be a British Gas customer** to apply for their primary individuals and families grant.

To qualify for help from the British Gas Energy Trust, you generally must meet the following criteria:

  • You live in England, Scotland, or Wales and carry clear energy debt on an active domestic account.
  • You have received expert debt advice from an independent agency (like Citizens Advice or StepChange).
  • You have a realistic plan to manage your future bills once the historical arrears are cleared.

Supplier-Specific Hardship Funds

If you are with a different supplier, they may run an internal scheme strictly for their own customers. Examples include the **EDF Customer Support Fund**, **E.ON Next Energy Fund**, and **OVO Energy Fund**.

Each supplier sets its own eligibility criteria, but they heavily prioritize households facing extreme circumstances, such as sudden redundancy, long-term severe illness, family bereavement, or domestic abuse. Smaller suppliers who do not run their own funds often partner with national charities like the **Fuel Bank Foundation** to distribute emergency fuel vouchers.

How to Submit a Strong Application

Hardship funds receive thousands of requests and reject incomplete applications. To give yourself the best chance of approval, gather the following before applying:

  1. **Proof of Income:** Recent payslips, bank statements, or benefit award letters.
  2. **Detailed Expenditure:** A full income and expenditure breakdown stamped by a professional debt advisor.
  3. **Your Latest Energy Bill:** Showing your exact meter readings, account number, and total arrears figure.
  4. **A Personal Statement:** Explain clearly what crisis caused the debt (e.g., 'I was off work sick for three months without pay') and how clearing it will allow you to maintain payments moving forward.
