Understanding NHS Prescription Charges and Savings
In England, NHS prescription charges are fixed at a flat rate of **£9.90 per item**. If your prescription includes multiple separate medicines, you will be charged £9.90 for each individual item.
If you do not qualify for free prescriptions but require regular medication, you can save significant money using an **NHS Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC)**. A PPC acts like a season ticket, covering all your regular NHS prescriptions for a fixed upfront price:
- **3-Month PPC:** Costs **£32.05** (saves you money if you need 4 or more items in 3 months).
- **12-Month PPC:** Costs **£114.50** (saves you money if you need 12 or more items in a year, and the cost can be spread across 10 monthly direct debits).
- **HRT PPC:** Costs **£19.80** and covers all listed Hormone Replacement Therapy medicines for a full 12 months.
Who Gets Free NHS Prescriptions Automatically?
You are legally exempt from paying the £9.90 prescription fee if you meet specific personal or financial criteria. You qualify automatically if you:
- Are aged 60 or over, or under 16.
- Are aged 16 to 18 and in full-time education.
- Are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months (and hold a valid Maternity Exemption Certificate).
- Have a specified medical condition, such as diabetes, epilepsy, or cancer (and hold a valid Medical Exemption Certificate).
- Receive qualifying income-related benefits, including Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, or Universal Credit (provided your net earnings fall below the strict threshold of £435 per month, or £935 if your claim includes a child or limited capability for work element).
NHS Dental Charges Explained
Unlike general GP medical care, NHS dental treatment is not entirely free for adults. Under the fixed dental banding system, you pay a single flat charge for a complete course of treatment, regardless of how many visits or individual procedures you require within that band:
- **Band 1 (£27.90):** Covers basic examinations, clinical diagnosis, X-rays, clinical advice, and a scale and polish if judged necessary.
- **Band 2 (£76.60):** Covers everything in Band 1 plus restorative treatments like fillings, root canals, or tooth extractions.
- **Band 3 (£332.10):** Covers everything in Bands 1 and 2 plus complex appliances such as crowns, bridges, and partial or full dentures.
- **Urgent Care (£27.90):** Covers emergency dental stabilization to relieve severe pain or infection.
The NHS Low Income Scheme (HC2 and HC3 Certificates)
If you do not receive qualifying income benefits but live on a modest income or have high living costs, you can apply for help through the **NHS Low Income Scheme** by completing an **HC1 form**.
The NHS Business Services Authority will assess your weekly income and housing commitments against your basic needs. If successful, you will receive one of two awards:
- **HC2 Certificate:** Full help. This entitles you to completely free NHS prescriptions, free NHS dental care, free eye tests, and help toward the cost of glasses.
- **HC3 Certificate:** Partial help. This provides a variable discount on dental care, eye care, and travel costs based on your specific financial calculation.
