A Guide to the Warm Home Discount Scheme

What is the Warm Home Discount Scheme?

The **Warm Home Discount Scheme** is a UK government initiative designed to help low-income households and pensioners cover the cost of heating their homes during the coldest winter months. It is a one-off payment of **£150** applied directly to your electricity account as a credit.

It is important to note that you do not receive this money as a cash payment in your bank account. Instead, your energy supplier applies the discount directly to your utility bill between October and March. If you are on a prepayment or pay-as-you-go smart meter, your supplier will provide the discount in the form of vouchers or top-up credit.

Who Qualifies Automatically? (Core Group 1 & 2)

The scheme has different rules depending on whether you live in England and Wales, or Scotland. In England and Wales, eligibility is determined automatically based on data matching between the DWP and energy suppliers.

**Core Group 1 (Pension Credit):** You qualify automatically if, on the qualifying date, you or your partner receive the **Guarantee Credit** element of Pension Credit.

**Core Group 2 (Low Income & High Energy Costs):** You may also qualify automatically if you receive certain means-tested benefits and your home is assessed as having high energy costs. These benefits include:

  • Universal Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Housing Benefit
  • Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit (under specific income thresholds)

How to Check If You Need to Apply

If you live in England or Wales, you generally **do not need to apply** for the Warm Home Discount. If you are eligible, you will receive a letter from the DWP between October and January confirming your automatic discount.

However, if you live in **Scotland**, only those on the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit receive it automatically. If you are on a low income in Scotland, you *must* apply directly to your energy supplier as part of their 'Broader Group' allocation. Funds are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so it is vital to apply as soon as your supplier's scheme opens in the autumn.

What to Do If Your Supplier is Not on the List

Not all energy companies participate in the Warm Home Discount scheme. However, all major suppliers (including British Gas, Octopus Energy, E.ON Next, EDF, and OVO) are legally required to take part. If your supplier is a very small, independent company, they may not offer the discount. In this scenario, it is worth checking if switching to a participating supplier would save you more overall, especially when factoring in the £150 rebate.
