How the Motability Scheme works
The Motability Scheme is a vehicle-leasing programme operated by Motability Operations for disabled people receiving an eligible mobility allowance. Instead of receiving some or all of that allowance personally, the customer asks the relevant benefits authority to pay it directly towards the lease.
Most car leases run for three years, while many wheelchair-accessible vehicle leases run for five years, according to Motability Scheme guidance. The package normally includes insurance, servicing, routine maintenance, tyre replacement and breakdown assistance, subject to the current lease terms.
The scheme is not a government grant and the customer does not usually own the vehicle at the end. It is also separate from a Blue Badge, Vehicle Excise Duty exemption and disability benefit entitlement.
Check before ordering: Motability prices and Advance Payments can change with each published price list. Confirm the live price, delivery estimate and cancellation terms with Motability or an accredited dealer before signing an order.
Who qualifies for the Motability Scheme in 2026/27?
You must receive one of the qualifying mobility allowances and normally have at least 12 months remaining on the award when applying, according to Motability Scheme eligibility rules. A pending claim, review or appeal does not provide eligibility until the qualifying award is formally in payment.
| Qualifying allowance | Required award | Administering body |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Independence Payment | Enhanced rate of the mobility component | DWP |
| Disability Living Allowance | Higher rate mobility component | DWP |
| Adult Disability Payment | Enhanced rate of the mobility component | Social Security Scotland |
| Child Disability Payment | Higher rate mobility component | Social Security Scotland |
| War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement | Qualifying award in payment | Veterans UK |
| Armed Forces Independence Payment | Qualifying award in payment | Veterans UK |
Eligibility is based on the relevant award rather than household income, employment status or savings. Receiving another disability benefit without the required mobility component does not by itself qualify someone for the scheme.
If a disability decision appears wrong, first check the decision letter and applicable challenge deadline. SupportFund readers can explore PIP eligibility and award guidance and help with disability benefits before deciding whether to request a mandatory reconsideration or other formal review.
What the lease costs — and what it does not cover
If a vehicle costs no more than the qualifying mobility allowance over the lease, the customer generally transfers the allowance without paying an Advance Payment. Other models require an Advance Payment paid upfront; this is not a refundable deposit and varies by vehicle, specification and quarterly price list, according to Motability.
Customers remain responsible for fuel or electricity, parking, tolls, fines and damage outside the lease or insurance terms. Optional extras, home charging work beyond any included installation offer, and non-standard adaptations may also create separate costs.
- Usually included: insurance, servicing, maintenance, tyres and breakdown cover, subject to the current Motability contract.
- Usually paid by the customer: fuel or charging, parking, penalties and optional equipment.
- Possible upfront cost: an Advance Payment or the charge for an adaptation not covered by available assistance.
Motability Foundation grants may help eligible customers with disability-related vehicle, adaptation or driving costs, but awards are discretionary and means-tested under the Foundation’s current criteria. Do not order a vehicle in the expectation of grant support until written approval has been issued.
Choosing a vehicle around real mobility needs
Start with access rather than make or appearance. Test whether the customer can enter safely, transfer comfortably, store mobility equipment and tolerate the seat position during a realistic journey.
For a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, check ramp gradient, entry height, internal headroom, restraint positioning and whether the wheelchair user can travel in the preferred position. An accredited adaptation installer or driving assessment centre can identify controls, hoists, swivel seats and other equipment that may reduce risk.
Practical tip: Take the wheelchair, scooter, walking aid or child seat to the demonstration. A boot capacity figure cannot show whether equipment fits safely once passengers and charging cables are aboard.
Electric vehicles need additional planning. Compare real journey patterns with charging access, check whether the property can support a home chargepoint and ask who pays for any non-standard electrical work; Ofgem provides independent information about domestic energy arrangements and consumer protections.
Use SupportFund’s household budget planner to test ongoing fuel, charging and parking costs before committing. A bundled lease removes several motoring bills, but it does not make everyday travel cost-free.
How to apply and protect your household budget
- Check the benefit decision letter and confirm the qualifying mobility award remains in payment.
- Use Motability’s official vehicle search and current price list to shortlist suitable options.
- Book demonstrations with accredited dealers and test access using everyday mobility equipment.
- Ask for a written breakdown of the Advance Payment, adaptations, optional extras and expected delivery arrangements.
- Complete the application through the dealer, supplying the identity, award and driver information requested by Motability.
The disabled customer does not necessarily have to drive, but the vehicle must be used for their benefit and every driver must comply with the insurance and scheme rules. Misuse can lead to investigation or termination of the lease.
A benefit reassessment can affect the lease if the qualifying mobility award ends. Contact Motability promptly after receiving a new decision rather than stopping payments or returning the vehicle without guidance.
If losing the vehicle would expose wider financial pressure, review other entitlements through SupportFund’s benefits calculator guidance. SupportFund.co.uk helps households identify emergency support, lower essential bills and plan around changes in disability income.
