The correct PIP payment number for your claim
For an existing PIP claim in England or Wales, GOV.UK lists the PIP enquiry line as 0800 121 4433 and the textphone number as 0800 121 4493. GOV.UK states that the lines are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, excluding bank holidays.
If you cannot hear or speak on the telephone, GOV.UK directs users to Relay UK by dialling 18001 followed by 0800 121 4433. British Sign Language users can access the video relay service linked from the official PIP contact page.
| Reason for contact | Official route | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Existing PIP payment or claim in England or Wales | 0800 121 4433 | Use for missing payments, award queries and changes of circumstances |
| Starting a new PIP claim in England or Wales | 0800 917 2222 | GOV.UK lists this separately from the existing-claim enquiry line |
| Adult Disability Payment in Scotland | Social Security Scotland | Most working-age disability claims in Scotland are handled under Adult Disability Payment, not PIP |
| PIP in Northern Ireland | Department for Communities | Use the Northern Ireland PIP Centre details published on nidirect |
Fraud warning: DWP will not ask you to move your PIP into a “safe account” or disclose a one-time banking passcode. End an unexpected call and contact the department through the number published on GOV.UK or your award letter.
What to check before reporting a missing payment
Start with your latest PIP decision letter, bank statement and normal payment date. A bank holiday can change when money reaches your account, so check the payment timetable published by GOV.UK before treating it as missing.
- Check the statement reference: DWP payments may appear under a shortened benefit reference rather than the full name Personal Independence Payment.
- Compare the payment period: PIP is normally paid every four weeks, while special arrangements can apply in limited circumstances.
- Review recent letters: a scheduled review, supersession or reported change may have altered the award.
- Contact your bank: ask whether a payment is pending, returned or blocked before calling DWP.
If the money has not arrived after these checks, call the existing-claim enquiry line. For help assessing how a delayed payment affects other household support, use SupportFund’s benefits calculator guidance.
Practical tip: Do not rely on the date another claimant is paid. Your payment cycle is tied to your own award, and the controlling evidence is your decision letter and DWP payment record.
Information to have ready when you call DWP
Having the right information ready helps the adviser locate the payment without unnecessary delay. GOV.UK says callers should have their National Insurance number available when contacting the PIP enquiry line.
- Your full name, address and date of birth
- Your National Insurance number
- The expected payment date and the date of the last payment received
- The amount shown on your bank statement
- Your latest PIP decision or review letter
- Details of any recent bank-account or address change
Write down the date and time of the call, the adviser’s name if provided, and any action promised. If a missing payment leaves you unable to buy food, top up energy or meet essential travel costs, check urgent household support options while DWP investigates.
If you need someone to speak for you, ask DWP what authority it requires. Being an appointee, attorney or informal helper does not automatically provide the same permission to discuss every part of a claim.
Wrong amount, stopped award or changed bank details
A smaller or stopped payment is not always a banking error. Ask DWP to explain the decision, its effective date and whether a written notice has been issued; the notice should tell you what challenge rights apply.
If you disagree with a decision
You can usually ask DWP for a mandatory reconsideration before appealing to a tribunal. Follow the deadline on the decision letter and explain which part is wrong, using relevant evidence rather than relying only on the fact that the payment changed.
See SupportFund’s wider PIP guidance for help understanding award components, reviews and decision challenges. PIP is not means-tested, but its outcome can affect access to certain disability-related additions, concessions or linked entitlements.
If your bank details have changed
Report new account details directly through an official DWP route. Keep the old account open until DWP confirms the change where possible, because closing it too soon can cause a payment to be returned.
Do not send bank details by ordinary email or social media. Use the official telephone number on GOV.UK or the contact instructions in your PIP letter, and never pay a third party to “release” a benefit payment.
Scotland, Northern Ireland and official checks
Disability-benefit administration differs across the UK. Social Security Scotland administers Adult Disability Payment, while the Department for Communities handles PIP in Northern Ireland; telephone details and procedures can therefore differ from the DWP arrangements used in England and Wales.
Check which organisation appears on your award letter before sharing personal information. If you have moved between UK nations, contact the organisation currently managing the claim rather than assuming your payment record transferred immediately.
Rates and contact arrangements can change. This article was reviewed on 5 August 2026; confirm current PIP rates, opening hours and contact details on GOV.UK, mygov.scot or nidirect before acting.
