Eligibility Criteria

Step-by-Step: How to Apply

    Tell your employer at least 15 weeks before your baby is due when you want to start maternity leave.

  2. 2

    Provide your employer with a MAT B1 medical certificate issued by your doctor or midwife.

  3. 3

    SMP is calculated automatically by your employer and paid into your regular salary through normal payroll.

If SMP is lower than your usual salary, your household may become eligible for Universal Credit top-ups, Council Tax Reduction, and local council family hardship funds.
