Bank Rate has come down, but not back to where households started

The official Bank Rate rose from 0.25% in December 2021 to 5.25% by August 2023, and has since fallen in steps to the rate in force today — still far above the pre-2022 level.

What's the angle?

The official Bank Rate rose from 0.25% in December 2021 to 5.25% by August 2023, and has since fallen in steps to the rate in force today — still far above the pre-2022 level.

Why it matters (SupportFund's interpretation)

SupportFund's reading is that 'rates are falling' coverage can obscure how much higher borrowing costs remain against the starting point, which matters for anyone remortgaging off a fixed deal agreed before 2022.
